Surapati
From a servant in slavery to ruler
Surapati rose up against the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on Java. He was so famous in his own time that his life story was recorded in numerous writings. A tale full of struggle and resistance, war and violence!
ACTIVITY
We also rebel sometimes. In the Rijksmuseum, you can use a hammer and chisel to carve or gouge out your defiance, your personal or collective resistance, in the wood of the sculpture.

We also want to give Surapati’s sculpture a scent. Send us recipes from your culture, from your family. These recipes often contain spices. They will be placed in jars near the sculpture.
