Access to the museum
The access road to the Rijksmuseum is open to pedestrians and cyclists only. The entrance cannot be reached by car. There is a kiss & ride point approximately 100 metres from the museum entrance. This is the best place to drop off visitors. The kiss &ride is located at the corner of the Jan Luijkenstraat and the Stadhouderskade.
Parking is permitted in several streets close to the Rijksmuseum. For instance, in the Johannes Vermeerstraat, Honthorststraat, Pieter de Hoochstraat and Jan Luijkenstraat.
Disabled parking spaces
There are three locations close to the Rijksmuseum with parking for the disabled. All of these are on the Museumplein side of the access road to the Rijksmuseum.
- Johannes Vermeerstraat: two disabled parking spaces next to Cobra Café. (6 meters long)
- Jan Luijkenstraat: two disabled parking spaces outside no. 4.
- Q-Park Museumplein. There are two disabled parking spaces at Level -1. Use the entrance at Van Baerlestraat 33b. The Rijksmuseum is approximately 500 metres from the pedestrian exit marked ‘Van Gogh Museum’.
With a European handicap card you may park for free almost everywhere in Amsterdam. You do need to ask a parking card at the Gemeente Amsterdam though: European disability parking card (GPK) - City of Amsterdam.
Access to the museum by public transport
Unfortunately, the nearby bus stop at Spiegelgracht has not yet been adapted for visitors with a visual impairment or for wheelchair users. For more information about access by public transport see Address and Directions.
Entrances, stairs and lifts
There are two entrances to the Rijksmuseum. Both are in the arcade that runs under the building, which is known as The Passage. This is a public road open to cyclists and pedestrians but not to cars. When you enter The Passage from the Museumplein side, you will find the entrances on your left. One has stairs and one has a lift. If you have a wheelchair, rollator, walking stick or pram, security staff will direct you to the lifts.
The staircase has twenty steps, with a landing after the thirteenth step. Both the stairs and the lift take you to the Atrium.
The Atrium is open daily from 09:00h until 18:00h. Here you will find the ticket offices, information desk, cloakroom, museum shop, public toilets and The Café.
