The Panpoëticon Batavûm

The Portrait of the Author as a Celebrity | Lieke van Deinsen

history

The Panpoëticon Batavûm is an eighteenth-century cabinet housing over 300 portraits of Dutch writers and poets. This remarkable collection, created by the wealthy painter Arnoud van Halen (1673-1732), is a sign of growing engagement with the (literary) past in an era traditionally described in terms of the Republic’s decline, Frenchification and loss of cultural identity.
