In 2026, the Rijksmuseum will once again host its annual Artist in Residence programme, inviting one artist to participate. The programme provides a stipend to the artist and a budget for the production of one or more artworks. It also offers opportunities for artistic research, experimentation and the making of new work.

Workplace

The Artist in Residence will have access to the collections, library, archive, laboratories and expertise. The programme further offers opportunities to join workshops and excursions to foster exchanges of knowledge. The Artist in Residence will also be able to conduct some of their artistic activities at the Rijksmuseum.

Project

The Rijksmuseum invites outstanding candidates to submit a proposal for an artistic project, preferably one that is research-based and that reflects on, responds to, and interacts with the Rijksmuseum’s collections or its history, activities and function as an institution. The selected artist will be expected to create an artwork or artistic intervention for presentation in the museum.

Residency

We welcome independent proposals that offer new perspectives on the Rijksmuseum’s collections, history and activities, and that perform research on them. The successful candidate will be free to work according to their own artistic process and method. There are no restrictions in terms of the genre, medium, subject or format of the artwork, provided that it does not contravene our policies and ethical principles, or compromise the safety of the collections, building, visitors and/or staff.

Dutch artists and non-Dutch artists who are well embedded in the Dutch art world are welcome to apply for this residency.

The residency in this annual programme runs from 1 February 2026 until 31 January 2027. (Please note that it is not possible to extend the duration of this residency).

I move freely between concepts and techniques, with access to unique spaces, archives, and cutting-edge conservation and restoration tools. But most importantly, the conversations with experts have opened up a world of knowledge and inspiration.

Aimée Zito Lema, Artist in Residence 2025
