Vase depicting a woman playing a pipa

The woman depicted on this vase is playing a pipa. A legend links this instrument to Princess Liu Xijun (123?–101 BCE), whom the emperor sent off to marry the king of the Wusun. The emperor ordered a stringed instrument to be made that could be played on horseback during her long journey. Liu also wrote the earliest poem attributable to a named woman in which she describes her homesickness.

    Rolwagenvaas van porselein met platte schouder, rechte hals en uitlopende rand, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw en op het glazuur blauw, rood, groen, geel, aubergine, zwart en goud. De wand is bedekt met bleu poudré (poederblauw) met hierin uitgespaard twee rechthoekige reserves met ingeknepen hoeken, de één gevuld met een vrouw met een twijgje zittend op een kruk op een terras met rotsen en planten, de ander met een vrouw met zittend op een bank met een muziekinstrument naast een kruk in een omheinde tuin met rotsen, planten en een boom; om de vakken een decoratie in goud, tussen de vakken een bloemvaas, om de voet krulwerk, op de schouder een swastika patroon afgewisseld met vakken gevuld met antiquiteiten, op de hals bloemtakken. Gerestaureerde barst in de rand en hals; op de onderzijde een oud label met 'Collection S. Alberge-La Haye 1750'. Bleu poudré met famille verte.
