Gourd-shaped Vase

anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1720

Around 1700 porcelain vases of this size were extremely rare and prestigious. This vase comes from the collection of Elector Augustus the Strong in Dresden. A number of duplicates from that collection were sold in the early 20th century, and this example found its way to the Rijksmuseum. Several identical vases can still be found in the museum in Dresden (the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen).

    Kalebasvormige vaas van porselein met drie verdikkingen, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw. De onderste twee bollen zijn bedekt met blauw met hierin uitgespaard bloemranken (chrysant, lotus, pioen) en chilongs (hoornloze draak). Het bovenste deel met bloemranken onderbroken door gelobde cartouches met uitgespaarde lotusranken. Op de nek een band met puntige bladmotieven. Gemerkt op de onderzijde met een ingegrift Johanneum nummer 'N363' in een dubbele cirkel. Blauw-wit.
