Ton Raateland upon his Return from Amersfoort Concentration Camp

Paul Huf (mentioned on object), 1943

Huf took this photograph of the graphic designer Raateland upon his return from Amersfoort Concentration Camp. The photographer portrayed his friend in a penetrating close-up. Huf would later become famous for his serene portraits and stylized commercial photography. These trademark features are also evident in the theatrical effect of the pronounced shadows in this portrait, but the scowling brow and crew cut negate any trace of glamour.
