The Battle of Bautersem, by C. Kruseman, 1839. The Dutch and Belgian armies clashed on 12 August 1831 near Louvain. Commanded by the crown prince, the future King William II, the Dutch army won the day. This was the last action in the Ten Day Battle. The painting shows a moment of heroism: the prince exchanges his wounded horse in order to join the fight again undaunted. This sketch was for a large canvas at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The painting is now lost.
