Of One Heart

Cornelis Kruseman (1797-1857), oil on canvas, 1830

Cornelis Kruseman was sometimes called ‘Italian Kruseman’ owing to his love for Italian art. After spending time in Rome (1821-1825), he worked in the Netherlands in the idealized style that he knew from Italy. This trio of young musicians in folk costume is a fine example of this. In contrast to Piety, also in this gallery, by the time Kruseman painted Of One Heart, he had virtually abandoned Dutch realism.
