The Flight into Egypt

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1654

The cropping of this Flight into Egypt is unusual. The lower legs of the donkey and Joseph’s feet are outside of the picture plane. This suggests that they might be wading through a ford. The shading on the Virgin and the Child has been applied with decidedly wide and open parallel hatching, silhouetting them lightly against the dense interplay of lines in the background.
