The Shepherd and his Family

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1644

In a hilly landscape, a shepherd hands his wife a jug while she nurses their child. The sheep drink from a brook on which they have descended. This scene recalls the biblical theme of Joseph and Mary resting on the flight into Egypt. The scratches at the top suggest that Rembrandt reused the plate, something he did quite often.
