Portrait of a Girl, Known as ‘The Little Princess’

Paulus Moreelse, c. 1623

This young girl is portrayed at her most beautiful, in her finest dress and bedecked with jewels, for which she was dubbed ‘the little princes.’ In the 17th century children were represented as small adults. Not only are her clothes a copy of women’s fashion, but her regal pose also makes a very grown-up impression. Paulus Moreelse received numerous commissions from the circles around the stadholder’s court, which favoured a conservative, classic portrait style.
