Portrait of Berend van Iddekinge, Johanna Maria Sichterman, and their Son Jan Albert

Philip van Dijk, 1744 - 1748

The Van Iddekinge and Sichterman couple from Groningen were Orangists (supporters of the stadtholder). While the statue behind the curtain references Van Iddekinge’s military career, above all the portrait exudes elgance and distinction. Their status is emphasized by the family arms crowning the frame. The parents seem to be oblivious to their young son, who is presenting some flowers.
