Notebook with 108 Photographs of Models Owned by Jacques de Lalaing (1858-1917)

Jacques Lalaing, attributed to Jacques Lalaing, c. 1883 - 1914

Scores of 19th-century artists owned photographs. The Brussels sculptor Jacques de Lalaing pasted them in a plain notebook he had bought at an office stationer’s. A small number of the photographs were taken by Marconi, Bonnard and Igout, well-known purveyors of ‘model photographs’ for artists. It is unclear whether Lalaing himself took the remaining photographs; however, they were definitely made in his studio as study material.
