To determine the ship’s position and chart its course, the captain had an entire arsenal of instruments at his disposal. Among the items found on Nova Zembla are an astrolabium catholicum (universal astrolabe), a fragment of a copper sounding line, a cross staff, a sextant and a chart compass.

    Kaartpasser met twee benen, elk aan de bovenkant halfcirkelvormig en zodanig gespleten en scharnierend dat het bovengedeelte der benen in de gesloten bovenrand een ring vormt. Het korte been is doorboord en heeft aan de binnenkant een gleufje. Oorspronkelijk hadden beide benen een ijzeren punt. Een dergelijke passer werd gebruikt om afstanden op de zeekaart af te passen.
