Model of a Maintop

Model van een grote mars, aan de voorkant afgerond. De constructie van deze mars is afwijkend van andere marsen: alle balken en vloerdelen zijn van dezelfde dikte en bestaan uit twee op elkaar geplaatste planken. Het resultaat is een mars van gelijke dikte en met eenvoudige halfhoutsverbindingen samengesteld. De marsrand is dikker en voorzien van een messing beslag.

Entry

Construction model of a maintop, rounded at the front. The construction of this top is different from other tops: all the beams and decking boards are equally thick and are made out of two planks placed on top of each other. The result is a top of even thickness and simple joinery of half-and-half scarfs. The top rim is thicker and reinforced with brass strips.

According to Obreen these tops were used by the Dutch East India Company at the end of the eighteenth century.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 162.
