Model of a Stopper and Bitts

Rijkswerf Amsterdam, 1854

Model van een kluisstopper met ketting, op een grondplank, met een apparte beting. Aan een eind van de grondplank loopt de ketting door een gewone knijper. De stopper bestaat uit een stel schijven aan het andere eind in de vloer gemonteerd, waarvan er een om een excentrische geplaatste as draait; de ketting loopt om de vaste schijf heen, naar voren om de excentrische schijf en weer terug naar achteren. De spanning op de ketting trekt de excentrische schijf naar achteren zodat de ketting tussen de twee schijven geklemd wordt. Om de voet van de losse achtkantige beting zit een schijf, zodat hij de vaste schijf op de grondplank kan vervangen.

Explanatory note

  • Zoals afgeleid kan worden uit het opschrift werd Saxbys patent gepubliceerd in het Nautical Magazine nr. 1 van 1854. Het werd beproefd op de Medusa, maar de Brown-stoppers werden beter geacht.

Model of a stopper with a chain, mounted on a base, and a separate pair of bitts.

At one end of the base the chain comes in through an ordinary stopper. At the other end a pair of sheaves is positioned on the deck, of which one turns on an eccentric axle. The chain goes around the fixed sheave first, then it goes forward around the eccentric sheave and off to the back again.

The tension on the chain will pull the eccentric sheave against the fixed one, squeezing the chain in between. The octagonal bitts have a sheave around the base and can replace the fixed sheave.

According to the inscription and Obreen’s catalogue,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 626. the model was made at the Navy dockyard in Amsterdam, based on the published specifications by Stephen Martin Saxby in Nautical Magazine number 1 of 1854. The stopper was tested on the Medusa, but the Brown’s stoppers (models NG-MC-624 and NG-MC-625) were considered to be more effective.2HNA 2.12.01 Min.
