Landscape with the Tafelberg

Jacob Cats (1741-1799), c. 1795

With the Tafelberg series Jacob Cats proved himself a master colourist in his drawings. Despite the limited range of colours of the heath, grass and woods, by using a variety of subtle tints, he succeeded in suggesting a vast sense of depth. Such coloured topographical depictions, also called ‘paintings on paper,’ were in great demand among collectors.
