Cup and Saucer with a Dark Brown Glaze
anonymous, c. 1730 - c. 1770
This specific brown glaze is described as cafe-au-lait in Europe. High concentrations of iron oxide were used to colour the glaze a deep rich brown. Another name for it was ‘Batavia brown’, referring to the VOC trading postfrom where these products were trans-shipped to Europe.
