A Khoikhoi Woman with an Infant

Andries Beeckman (1628-1664). Andries Beeckman recorded the people he saw on his travels to South Africa and Southeast Asia. As far as we know he drew them from life. Only he probably did not see the Khoikhoi woman with an infant in this way, as he copied her from a drawing in an English travel journal. Beeckman’s drawings found favour with European collectors and he also used them as preliminary studies for his paintings.

    Zwarte vrouw gekleed in een schaamlap. Om haar beide schenen heeft ze leren banden gewikkeld om haar te beschermen tegen het scherpe struikgewas. Om haar pols draagt ze een ketting met rode kralen. Op haar rug draagt ze een zuigeling die drinkt uit haar borst die ze over haar schouder heeft geslagen, een bekend westers cliché. In haar linkerhand houdt ze een druipend stuk darm vast. Dat verwees naar de gewoonte van de Khoikhoi om rauwe ingewanden te eten. Deze tekening is gekopieerd naar een prent in Thomas Herbert, 'Some yeares travels into Africa an Asia the Great' (1634).
