Kapmes met korte kling met rechte rug en gekromde snede. Het gevest is geheel van geelkoper, met een gegroefde greep en stootplaat met eindknoppen. De onderband met eindknop is geheel binnen de leren schede genaaid, zodat alleen de knop uitsteekt. De messing bovenband heeft een koperen draagknop voor de draagband, die aan een broekriem gedragen moet worden.

Explanatory note

  • Dit kapmes werd oorspronkelijk met houten greep ontworpen voor de infanterie in 1862, en in de jaren 1880 in gewijzigde vorm ook opgenomen in het Korps Mariniers, waar het thans nog in gebruik is. De messing greep schijnt een typisch Marine-kenmerk te zijn.

Cutlass and Scabbard

Entry

Cutlass with a short blade with curved cutting edge and a straight back. The hilt is entirely made of brass, with a grooved grip and opposed quillons. The chase of the scabbard has a knob and is placed inside the leather scabbard, only the knob protruding. The brass top locket has a copper button for the belt, which is fashioned to be worn from a waistband.

This cutlass was originally designed with a wooden grip for infantry in 1862, and adopted by the Marines in a slightly altered form in the 1880s. It is still in use today. The brass grip appears to have been a typical Navy feature.
