Jan Cornelisz Sylvius

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1633

Here we see another preacher, this time Jan Cornelisz Sylvius, the father of Petrus Sylvius (at the left on this wall), who was related to Rembrandt and Saskia. He moved in their circle, attended the baptism of their first children and moreover was Saskia’s guardian. This is Rembrandt’s first formal etched portrait, and its execution is somewhat coarse.
