Entry

Polychromed fully planked wooden half bracket model of the port side of a ship, mounted on a small wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is fully planked on top of frame moulds. Twenty-two pierced gun ports are situated on the two gun decks and the quarterdeck. The last port on the lower deck has a port-lid. The sides of the forecastle and quarterdeck are painted black, the quarterdeck bullwark is painted a dark blue. The quarterdeck and poop hances are decorated with carved floral volutes as their hancing pieces. The forecastle and poop both have railings. The model has a fore channel, the main and mizzen channels are continuous. Ahead of the main channel entering steps are placed. The sheer rises aft. Two wales and the sheer rail are indicated; the wales are painted black. The damaged bow does feature a beakhead with a carved figurehead depicting a rampant crowned lion, two hawseholes, a beakhead bulkhead and a red cathead; its knee is missing. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The damaged taffrail and the quarter and stern galleries are decorated with yellow carvings. The lower finishing of the quarter gallery is a floral garland. The model does not have a rudder. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. No masts or bowsprit.

This model was identified by elimination only and its identification therefore remains uncertain.1A. Lemmers (ed.), Maritime Technology from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam: Multimedia Catalogue of the Dutch Navy Model Collection 1698-1889, coll. cat. Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum) 1995, no. 304. According to Obreen this model, number 304, represents the 40-gun frigate Tholen, 149 feet long, built in Zeeland in 1782.2J.M.
