Entry

Framed black-and-white photograph of a screw steamer 4th class on a mooring near the shore, seen from port with buildings in the background.

Bonaire, 45 metres long, was built by the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij Fijenoord in Rotterdam from 1876 to 1877 for service in the Dutch West Indies. It was converted into a receiving ship in Hellevoetsluis in 1902, turned over to the nautical college in Delfzijl in 1923 and renamed Abel Tasman.1A.J. Vermeulen, De schepen van de Koninklijke Marine en die der gouvernementsmarine 1814-1962, The Hague 1962, p. 77. Today the ship is being restored and is moored at Willemsoord, Den Helder.2J.
