Jerome and Catherine sit on a grass-covered bench before some rose bushes. The two saints can be identified by their attributes: Jerome with the lion, and Catherine with the sword and the broken wheel. Catherine was the daughter of a king and served as a role model for wealthy courtly ladies. The costly heartshaped book she holds probably contains profane love songs. Are we looking at a portrait?

De hl. Hiëronymus en de hl. Catharina zitten op een zodenbank die is afgeschermd van de achterliggende landschap door een rozenhaag. Hiëronymus is vergezeld door zijn symbooldier, de leeuw, uit wiens poot hij een doorn heeft getrokken. Aan Catharina’s voeten ligt een smeulend, gebroken houten rad, en naast haar leunt een lang zwaard, allebei symbolen van haar martelaarschap. De koningsdochter Catharina gold als rolmodel voor rijke, hoofse vrouwen, en als zodanig is zij hier ook uitgebeeld. Ze heeft naar de mode van die tijd een hoog geschoren voorhoofd, en is voorgesteld in een ook al modieus met bont gevoerd overkleed van zijde. De gehele scène is ingekaderd door een vergulde arcade met maaswerk. Op de achtergrond is een weids landschap afgebeeld met enkele laatgotische gebouwen, een vijver met twee zwanen en in de verte de contouren van een stad met daarachter hoge bergen.
