French Gallantry, or English Charm

anonymous, c. 1810 - c. 1812

This couple is elegantly arrayed according to the style of around 1812. The strapping Frenchman wears the popular Carrick coat with a triple collar, along with a white cravat tied in a large knot. His form-fitting pantalons show off his athletic legs to their best advantage. The Englishwoman is aptly garbed in a redingote, a full-length coat of English origin, whose fabric is so fine that it moulds to every curve of her broad hips and heavy thighs.

    Een man en vrouw lopen gearmd. Zij draagt een hooggesloten japon met verhoogde taille en lange mouwen. Accessoires: hoed met veren en striklinten, sjaal met aan de uiteinden franjes, ceintuur, schoenen met puntige neuzen. Hij is gekleed in een overjas (carrick) met vier schouderkragen, frak met twee rijen knopen, gestreept vest en lange broek. Cravate en hemd met gerimpelde jabot. Accessoires: hoge hoed, monocle aan een koord, handschoenen, breloque, zweep, laarzen met kwasten en hakken.
