Cupboard

Herman Doomer, 1632

Herman Doomer, the most famous ebony woodworker in Amsterdam in the early 17th century, played an important role in the development of this new specialty in the city’s furniture-making industry. This cupboard is likely his first spectacular masterpiece. The radiant mother-of-pearl was inlaid by another master craftsman specialized in this technique, Jean Bellequin. He engraved the various fruits, birds, and other ornamental motifs that embellish this cupboard.
