Composition no. 64

Ger Gerrits, 1949

After World War II, Gerrits wanted to continue the pioneering work of the first generation of abstract artists. With others, he founded the association Creation ‘to promote absolute art.’ The name as well as the swirling forms reference Van Deene and Bendien’s earlier work. The use of colour, on the other hand, was based on De Stijl’s pictorial idiom.
