Boy in Poptji Djarie, Paramaribo, 1975

Willem Diepraam (signed by artist), 1975 - 1979

The photographer Willem Diepraam and the journalist Gerard van Westerloo made reportages for the weekly magazine Vrij Nederland on the eve of Suriname’s independence (1975). They traversed the entire country, from Nickerie in the hinterland to the run-down workingclass district Poptji Djarie in Paramaribo. It was in this period that Diepraam broke away from the narrative journalistic form. He tried to encapsulate information, a story, and drama in a single powerful image.
