Bearded Old Man with High Forehead

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1629

Even these daydreaming greybeards stare into space, as is so often the case with Rembrandt. In the top print, Rembrandt carefully renders the wrinkles in the forehead and beneath the left eye; however, it is more a study of the fall of light. The man’s forehead, shoulder and torso are so sharply illuminated that the contours are barely visible.
