Getting started with the collection:
Bearded Man in a Velvet Cap with a Jewelled Clasp
Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1637
The attire of these men leaves no doubt that they were intended as tronies. They wear berets, one of which is decorated with a cloak clasp, or a Polish fur cap (kutchma). In the print with the fur cap, the clasp simply adorns the man’s chest. The faces are sometimes so specifically rendered that they strike one as being portraits.
