Two plaques with busts

In the 16th century, artists often combined individual enamel plaques to form large tableaux. The particular form of these examples suggests they may have been intended to fill a corner. It was not unusual for classical gods or ancient heroes to appear in support of the message in the principal scene: often they would symbolize one of the virtues.

    Ruitvormige plaquette van koper, gedecoreerd met een voorstelling in email. Centraal staat het grisaille portret van een man met het hoofd naar links gewend. Hij draagt een mantel, die op zijn schouder openvalt, waardoor een schouderstuk van zijn harnas met een masker of leeuw zichtbaar wordt. De hoeken zijn opgevuld met vergulde bladranken.
