Laura Theresa Alma Tadema (Lady), 1874

Anna, the painter’s seven-year-old stepdaughter, holds up a print with both hands. She has to peer around the sheet; that is how large it is, or conversely just how small Anna is. The Alma Tadema family filled their house with portraits of themselves. Possibly this small painting was among them. It affords the viewer an intimate glimpse into the child’s world while simultaneously demonstrating a fondness for graphic art.

    Anna, het zevenjarig stiefdochtertje van de schilderes, houdt met beide armen een grote prent omhoog. Ze kijkt er omheen, de prent is bijna te groot voor haar. Ze is gezeten achter een lange houten tafel waarop de portefeuille met andere prenten ligt, het omslag rust tegen de wand links. Achter Anna hangt een grote tekening of schets op bruin papier in een smalle gouden lijst aan de wand. De compositie volgt het liggend formaat van het paneeltje. De kleuren zijn ingetogen gehouden en benaderen die van een prent: zwart met verschillende tinten wit en oker. Alleen het behang op de wand vertoont een lichtblauw patroon, een kleur die meer geïntensiveerd terugkomt aan de binnenkant van de kaft van de prentenmap.
