Airs and Graces, Opus CX

Laura Theresa Alma Tadema (Lady), 1872 - 1909

A girl dances around the room while her mother and a man playing a lute look on. The clothes, jewellery, and setting are clearly inspired by 17th-century Dutch paintings, although Alma Tadema gave them her own twist. Her works in this style met with international success. The light streaming in and the map on the wall are reminiscent of paintings by Vermeer, who was rediscovered at this time.
