When China was ravaged by war in the mid-17th century it became harder to obtain export porcelain. So the Dutch East India Company (VOC) decided to order the same style of porcelain in Japan. The VOC’s directors described their specifications in a letter from 1661: ‘the dishware should be made flat, and of the same kind of flower work as the old Chinese porcelain.’
