A Fountain at Grottaferrata

Josephus Augustus Knip, c. 1809 - c. 1812

Grottaferrata is located southeast of Rome, on the northern side of Lake Albano. Knip worked up only a small section of his crisply, carefully detailed graphite sketch with grey wash and a touch of watercolour. It is precisely this ‘unfinished’ character that often lends his drawings their exceptional appeal.
