A Cavalry Fight

Rembrandt van Rijn, 1629

At times, it is not at all obvious what Rembrandt is trying to tell us. For example, in the top print he depicts a horseman, without any indication of what exactly is going on. In the bottom print, a cavalry encounter, with much clashing of arms, seems to be taking place; however, that does not explain what is happening. Perhaps Rembrandt was interested chiefly in rendering chaos and movement.
