Ronde mast met vierkante top, oren, kalven, zalings, rijschaal en zijschalen. De mastvoet is vrij vierkant en bestaat uit acht delen: de vierkante mastkoning is, anders dan bij andere masten, diagonaal geplaatst, dus met de hoeken naar de zijden van de mast, zodat de wangen driehoekig in doorsnede zijn, hun buitenkant afgerond. Vanaf het mastgat zijn drie wangen aan de achterkant toegevoegd die geheel naar boven doorlopen, terwijl de voorste drie delen net boven de langszalingen ophouden; vanaf dit punt bestaat de mast dus weer uit acht delen en wordt weer vierkant. De delen worden met een groot aantal kuipbanden bijeengehouden. Twee zijschalen verstevigen het geheel; zij ondersteunen ook de langszalingen samen met de oren, die niet tegen de zijden maar tegen de voorkant van de mast zijn bevestigd met ijzers en bouten. Twee dwarszalings en kalven zijn op de langszalings gelegd, en tussen de oren is een rijbed aangebracht, dat naar beneden toe verlengd is in een rijschaal. Bij het mastgat zijn twee inkepingen voor de oren en twee voor de langszalings, indien de mast omgedraaid wordt.

Explanatory note

  • Dit model stelt een mast voor van een Engels fregat van 44 stukken in 1821, naar het ontwerp van sir Robert Seppings. Het doel van het ontwerp was zodanig dat de mast omgedraaid kon worden. Het is bijna identiek aan NG-MC-137.

Construction model of a round mast with a square head, bibbs, chocks, trestletrees and crosstrees, rubbing paunch and side fishes.

The heel is rather square and made of eight parts. Unlike nearly all the other masts in the Navy Model Room, this square spindle is set with the corners directed to the sides, so that the side fishes are triangular in section, their outer face rounded off. From the mast hole upwards three side fishes have been added to the back, whereas the three fishes to the front end just above the trestletrees. From here on the mast head thus again consists of eight parts and becomes square shaped. The parts are held together with a large number of mast hoops. Two cheeks reinforce the structure. They also support the trestletrees together with the bibbs, which are not set to the side of the mast but in front of it, and are attached with irons and bolts. Two crosstrees and chocks are laid on the trestletrees, a furring is set between the bibbs, which is extended downwards to form a rubbing paunch. Near the mast hole the mast has two scores for the bibbs and two for the trestletrees, for when the mast is inverted.

This model represents the mast of an British 44-gun frigate in 1821, after a design by the British naval architect Robert Seppings (1767-1840).1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 142. The purpose of this design was that the mast could be turned upside down. It is almost identical to model NG-MC-137.
