Explanatory note

  • Deze en MC-1125-A en C werden door het schroefstoomschip Reteh (6 stukken, oorspronkelijk de Sprinkhaan, lang 43 m, gebouwd te Amsterdam in 1858-1860, niet meer vernoemd vanaf 1872) veroverd op piraten die zich verschanst hadden op een eilandje in de baai van Lobo. Het eiland is Jolly-eiland genoemd, naar Ltz. H.L. Jolly die bij deze actie het leven verloor.

Indonesian pirate flag. It has a white vertical bar near the hoist with three rosettes, then three horizontal bars, red-blue-red.

This and two other flags (NG-MC-1125-1 and NG-MC-1125-3) were captured from pirates on an island in the Bay of Lobo by the 6-gun screw steamer Reteh in 1862 (originally built as Sprinkhaan, 43 metres long, in Amsterdam in 1858-60 and not mentioned after 1872).1A.J. Vermeulen, De schepen van de Koninklijke Marine en die der gouvernementsmarine 1814-1962, The Hague 1962, p. 67. The island was thereafter called Jolly Island to commemorate Lieutenant H.L. Jolly who was killed in this action.
