Nautilus cup

anonymous, c. 1630 - c. 1660

The body of this cup is made from the shell of a marine mollusc, the nautilus. It also served as the inspiration for the decoration, which consists of a multitude of sea creatures. Dolphins and mermaids swim around the foot; fish, sea gods and goddesses form the bands of the mount.

    Nautilusbeker in montuur van verguld zilver. Op de hoekpunten van het driekantige voetstuk bevinden zich zeemeerminnen. De kop van een dolfijn is zichtbaar onder hun kronkelende dubbele staarten. In hun handen houden zij de losse uiteinden van over hun schouder en over hun hoofd rondlopend bandwerk, dat op de zijden, boven een frats, verbonden is. Op dit voetstuk is een naakte vrouwenfiguur gezeten, Een doek ligt om haar lendenen geplooid. Met hoofd en handen ondersteunt zij een bladrozet, waarop de schelp rust en waaraan klampen gehecht zijn, respectievelijk bekroond door een Nereïde en een Triton.
