Egrets in Flight

anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700

A flight of small egrets occupies the full width of this pair of folding screens. There is movement everywhere, from the dynamic waves to the stylized clouds in gold leaf, most of which serve as backdrops for the birds. Thanks to generous financial support these screens were recently restored. The paintings were cleaned, re-stretched and fitted with a new silk frame.
