Dutch Going Global
Guided tour
The Dutch traveled the world, and still do. Where did they travel to, and what were their motives to do so? During this tour the pupils will discover the story behind the objects and works of art that reflect the Dutch history around the globe.
Program
This one-hour tour will take your pupils on a journey through the collection the Rijksmuseum has on show, including the famous works by Rembrandt.
We will explore the history of the Dutch people who traveled across the globe, looking for ways to become rich. Trading in nutmeg, porcelain and other luxurious goods were the main reason the East and West India Companies were established.
However, global trade came at a cost, often involving violence and the trade in enslaved people. The Dutch were nonetheless heavily influenced by the cultures they touched upon, resulting in “typical Dutch” things.
