More Than Wood
Exploring the variety of materials in wood and furniture conservation
The two-day symposium More Than Wood, jointly organised by the Rijksmuseum and Stichting Ebenist, aims to explore the wide variety of non-wood materials found in furniture and related wooden objects, and how they are addressed in current conservation practice. This includes upholstery, metals, ivory, glass, porcelain and plastics.
Furniture and wooden objects are rarely made of wood alone. Wood and furniture conservators are regularly confronted with a wide array of materials, making the field inherently cross-disciplinary and requiring knowledge that reaches far beyond wood alone.
Participants can expect presentations from conservators, art historians, researchers, and craftspeople that address all aspects of materials combined with wood in furniture and related objects, from historical, technical, and conservation perspectives.
Following the symposium, the presentations will be compiled as articles and published in the long-running proceedings series by Stichting Ebenist.
