Ideas about gender influence all of us and everything we do, from what we put on in the morning to how we want to be addressed, and the way we want to appear in photos. But the way we interpret those ideas is different for each era, place and individual. So what does gender mean to us? With that question in mind, we got down to work.

We are ten students from all over the Netherlands who responded to an open call from the Rijksmuseum. We met up five times to talk, write and take photographs of each other to show what gender means to us. Photographer Bete van Meeuwen was our guide. Watch the video to see how we made the photographs.

We took inspiration for some of the photos from objects in the Point of View exhibition, which is running throughout summer 2024 at the Rijksmuseum – and there’s a selection of our photos in the exhibition!
