On the weekend of October 11th and 12th, the Rijksmuseum will host a unique screening of Occupied City. This is a one-time opportunity to see the entire 34 hour film with sound and narration continuously. The screening begins on Saturday morning at 9.30 hr in the museum's auditorium and will continue through until Sunday evening, creating a unique overnight experience.

Occupation in Amsterdam

In the museum's auditorium you can watch the entire 34 hour film, which travels to over 2000 addresses across the city to uncover what took place behind each facade in the years of the Nazi occupation. The work is based on  Atlas of an Occupied City. Amsterdam 1940-1945, by the historian and filmmaker Bianca Stigter. As the stories accumulate over the course of the film, what emerges is both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on time and memory.

The presentation of the full length 34 hour film at the Rijksmuseum coincides with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and the commemoration of 80 years of liberation.

Unique film marathon

To watch the entire film it is possible to book a 34 hour ticket. Alternatively, if you prefer to join for part of the screening choose a day or night ticket instead. Tickets are available from € 10.

Occupied City (Still)

The silent version of the film can be seen daily on the museum’s façade until 25 January.
