Lohkay inspired many others to resist, even to this day. When are you a hero and when are you a rebel? Will history vindicate you?

ACTIVITY

In the Rijksmuseum, we are stringing good luck beads. At the same time, we think about the following questions:

  • Because of the lockdown we have experienced less freedom. What does freedom mean to you, how free are you? For how many beads would you give away your freedom?
  • Lohkay was a rebel in her time, but now she is seen as a hero. Her story is still being told, she inspired many other enslaved people to resist. What makes the difference for you, when are you a rebel and when are you a hero?
  • Would you consider it worth your while to try to escape? Lohkay knew there would be consequences if she was caught.

FROM HOME

When you do this assignment at home, you can string beads or make a brooch from beads. If you don’t have beads, you can use wads of paper, papier-mâché or other materials for stringing necklaces. We will add these to the sculpture of Lohkay.
