Korean artist Lee Ufan describes his work as ‘art of the encounter’. Find time this summer for your very own calm encounter with Lee Ufan’s sculptures, among the hustle and bustle of museum square.

Reflection

The minimalist works are invitations to contemplate, to find a moment of quiet and calm on the museum square. Quiet reflection is a recurring theme in Lee Ufan’s work. This summer the Rijksmuseum Gardens host the artist’s first ever solo exhibition in the Netherlands.

Dialogue

See the nine iconic stone and metal sculptures in dialogue with the surrounding nature and the architecture of the museum. You will find seven of the sculptures in the gardens and one in the museum itself. Lee Ufan has recreated several of his key works especially for this Rijksmuseum exhibition.

Eleventh edition

This is the 11th edition in a series of annual solo sculpture exhibitions at the Rijksmuseum. Previous editions featured the work of Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Joan Miró and many other artists. The curators of the Lee Ufan exhibition are guest curator Alfred Pacquement, former director of Centre Pompidou; and the Rijksmuseum’s curator of 20th-century art Mels Evers.

About Lee Ufan

Lee Ufan (b. 1936) is a co-founder of the Japanese avant-garde art movement Mono-ha (School of Things), whose exponents use raw materials and elements such as stone, iron and water to explore the relationship between objects and space. Besides being a sculptor, Lee Ufan is a poet, philosopher and painter. His work is to be found in museum collections around the world, including those of MoMA, Centre Pompidou and the Tate Gallery.
