Getting started with the collection:
The Birth of Jesus
The Nativity attributed to Hans Kamensetzer (active c. 1471–1487), Strasbourg, c. 1470, hardwood (walnut or limewood?) with original polychromyHumans, angels and animals adore the new-born Jesus. You might think this cosy crèche scene belongs underneath a Christmas tree, but for people in the Middle Ages, such nativity groups were objects of intense devotion to God.
