Research Library and Study Room Prints & Drawings
Anyone who wants to conduct research using the collections of the Rijksmuseum is welcome in the Rijksmuseum Research Library and Study Room Prints & Drawings.
Consulting the library collection
To consult the library collection of the Rijksmuseum Research Library, please follow these two steps:
- Book a workspace
- Request the works you would like to consult via the library catalogue
The reserved workspace is intended for those who will use the library collection. If this is not the case, the reservation will be canceled.
There is a free book scanner available. Please bring your own USB stick.
Users with an active library account can request free scans from the library collection.
Library Collection Delivery Times
The library collection will be delivered twice a day from Monday to Friday.
- Books requested before 8 a.m. will be ready for you in the Reading Room by 11:30 a.m. the same day.
- Books requested before 12 noon will be ready for you in the Reading Room by 3:30 p.m. the same day.
- No books are delivered on Saturdays. However, books requested before 12 noon on Friday will be ready for you in the Reading Room on Saturday. Books available on the shelves in the Study- and Reading Room can also be accessed on Saturday.
Consulting prints, drawings and photographs
To study works on paper from the collections of the Print Room, the Dutch History Department and the Royal Antiquarian Society, please schedule an appointment at the Study Room Prints & Drawings. Send an e-mail to studiezaal@rijksmuseum.nl and include the following information:
- The object numbers of the works you wish to consult, which can be found in Collection Online. If you want to consult all works by an artist from the collection, providing the full name and the technique(s) will suffice.
- Your preferred date and time of visit.
- Contact details (name, phone number).
Please request your appointment at least two business days in advance. We will confirm your appointment via e-mail.
Please note that certain requested items may not be available. We will notify you in such cases.
Admission and identification
After reserving your workspace, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. This e-mail will also include an entrance ticket that you need to present at the museum entrance.
With the ticket, you can skip the line at the main entrance and use the 'friend's wardrobe'. You may enter the museum multiple times within the reserved time slot.
Coats, bags, food, and drinks are not allowed. Some belongings may be carried in a transparent bag (available at the wardrobe). Bringing your own books is not permitted.
Upon entering the Research Library or Study Room Prints & Drawings, you may be asked to show your entrance ticket and a valid ID.

Groups are welcome
Please send your request at least one month in advance to studiezaal@rijksmuseum.nl. Include the name of your institution, a list of objects you wish to consult, and the number of participants. We will inform you as soon as possible regarding the availability of your group visit.
Cancelling your reservation
If you need to cancel or change your reservation, please inform us as soon as possible via e-mail at studiezaal@rijksmuseum.nl or by calling us at +31 (0)20 6747055 (Research Library) or +31 (0)20 6747267 (Study Room Prints & Drawings).
We reserve the right to cancel an appointment. In such cases, we will contact you as soon as possible.

Use the main entrance. Follow the signs for ‘Library’. Go to the first floor. Enter through the Waterloo Room. The Research Library and the Study Room Prints & Drawings are located next to each other.
