Mizuno and the Rijksmuseum have joined forces again this year, for the 2025 TCS Amsterdam Marathon. The partnership has resulted in two limited-edition running shoes and sneakers – the Wave Rider 29 Amsterdam and the Contender Rijksmuseum – inspired by early 20th-century Japanese kimonos.

Wave Rider 29

The Wave Rider 29 has been Mizuno’s best-selling running shoe ever since it was launched in 1997. This year’s design is inspired by a richly decorated kimono (1920–1940) featuring cranes flying above a rough sea and rocky outcrops – water is a motif of indisputable significance in both Japan and the Netherlands. Striking details include the colour gradient on the mesh upper: the blend from light to dark blue symbolises the transition from shallow to deep water. The highlight is the insole, where the kimono pattern comes vividly to life. And in a subtle tribute to urban tradition, the design also draws inspiration from the decorative manhole covers of Osaka.

Mizuno Contender Rijksmuseum

AlongWave Rider 29, this autumn Mizuno is also introducing a new take on the Contender Rijksmuseum. The colours and details are directly inspired by another decorated Japanese kimono (1920–1940), featuring a Chinese shishi (guardian lion). The lion’s orange mane – a symbol of courage and resilience – features prominently on the tongue of the shoe. The water theme is also subtly incorporated into this shoe design.

Limited editions for the 2025 Amsterdam Marathon

Both models were specially designed for the 2025 Amsterdam Marathon and are available in limited numbers only. Mizuno and the Rijksmuseum have been partnering since 2018. Previous Mizuno limited editions took inspiration from subjects such as Rembrandt, Cranes and Vermeer.
